I love the start of the Advent season - the stockings are hung, the tree is lit and Christmas music is playing in the the background. It's the time of the year where I read over the same familiar Scriptures in preparation for Christmas, soaking them in, revealing new truths in the word and showing me some of the same truths I always need reminding of again year after year.
Whether you do a simple Scripture reading or an activity-based devotion, make sure you do something to center your heart and your family's heart around this Advent season. There's a lot of great stuff out there for all ages!
Preschoolers and Elementary Kids
The Christmas Star from Afar is an activity book and nativity set that uses an interactive game to show kids the real meaning of Christmas. By using the Star, not only the guide and hope of the Wise Men but also the Light of the World, kids are able to see the nativity story illustrated in front of their eyes. This is a great option for preschoolers.
Unwrapping the Greatest Gift is a beautifully illustrated book with ornaments that has 25 stories to tell the story of Jesus' family from Creation to His Coming. Because of the lengths of the stories and content, I felt like it was best to do this with our elementary kids.
Truth in the Tinsel will walk your kids through a passage of Scripture, the making of an ornament and talking points for your kids in the Advent season. The hands-on learning is great for both preschoolers and elementary kids.
The Jesus Storybook Bible is a wonderful storybook Bible where all the Bible Stories point to Jesus. There are 24 stories leading up to the birth of Christ that are perfect to do in December up to Christmas. Both preschoolers and elementary aged kids will enjoy reading the stories.
Teenagers and Adults
There are many great online resources for both men and women to take advantage of during the Advent season. IF:Equip is a great online bible study that provides a passage of Scripture and a short video by Christian women explaining what the passage of Scripture means to them. I've done several of their book studies, and they never disappoint in content.
She Reads Truth and He Reads Truth is an online devotional tool that provides a Scripture reading, a devotion and time for reflection. You can buy the gorgeous companion study book to go along with it, but it's not needed. This would be a great resource for couples to do together.
Unwrapping the Greatest Gift (adult version) retraces the lineage from Adam to the Messiah to show the love story that has been coming for us since the beginning of time. Ann Voskamp's beautifully written devotions and short reflection questions will help you grow in your walk during the Advent season.
Waiting Here for You: A Journey Advent of Hope takes you through discovering that waiting is never wasted when it means waiting on the Lord. Louie Giglio writes, "The message of Advent is a celebration of hope and Waiting Here for You is filled with hope for everyone who is waiting: waiting on a solution, a diagnosis, a relationship, a breakthrough, rescue." These daily reflections are great for men or women.
Make sure before all the preparation of family get togethers and presents, that you're able to take the time to prepare your heart and your family's heart for Christmas. It's time that will be well spent remembering why we celebrate this Christmas season!
